Multicultural Children's Book Day 2022

Once again, I am honored to participate in Multicultural Children's Book Day. This year I received two books to review!

The Adventures of Keva: The Power of the Trees by Ebony Zayzay, illustrated by Upit Dyoni (2021).

Keva loves exploring nature with her parents, especially learning about the power of trees and how essential they are to our planet. When her favorite "mother" tree, Iya, is chopped down, she experiences the magic of the tree and the importance of conservation. I loved the bright, graphic style of the illustrations.

Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess
by Deedee Cummings, illustrated by Charlene Mosley (2021).

Kayla's mom encourages her to have a plan for every day, because plans give you hope, and hope gives you dreams. When her mom receives a job promotion and gifts Kayla with a tiara, she encourages her to always believe and remember how special she is. The colorful watercolor illustrations nicely complement the dream theme of the story.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2022 (1/28/22) is in its 9th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.

MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about our Mission & History HERE.
