The Christmas Story by Brian Wildsmith (Knopf, 1989).
I loved this book as a kid. I wasn't raised religious, but I liked the story of the little donkey and was in awe of the shiny gold in the illustrations. Rereading it, I realize this isn't told in a religious way, it just tells the story of a donkey and little girl going to pay a visit to an important baby. I'm even more blown away by the illustrations now, which unfortunately are not well captured in my cell phone photography here. This is a wonderful book that tells a story of love and celebration of children.
