by John Bierhorst, illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon.
Published by Dial Books in 1970.
This is a beautifully illustrated book based on a Shawnee legend. I found it at a used bookstore the other day. The Dillons are some of my favorite illustrators.
Leo and Diane Dillon were a prolific husband-and-wife team. You can find a great blog of their artwork here.

Welcome
Bookworm at an early age |
I've been a lover of children's literature pretty much my whole life. If anything, my appreciation and slight obsession has only grown over time. Ever since about age eight, I've wanted to be a children's writer. Not just a writer, but a children's writer. In college I studied art and English, my two main interests that can so wonderfully combine into picture books.
In between writing, I love reading blogs and discovering new illustrators or books. I am particularly interested in diversity and multiculturalism in literature. I hope to share book reviews and favorite illustrations, analyze topics, discuss writing and publishing, and more.
